What is A B A Therapy?
How Do You Describe Applied Behavior Analysis (A B A) Therapy?
Applied behavior analysis (A B A) is the science that studies why people behave the way they do. A B A-based therapy and treatments use the basic principles of behavior analysis to bring about meaningful and positive change in behavior. The basic premise of A B A is that we can break down skills into component parts and through repetition and reinforcement, encourage learning.
A B A therapy is widely recognized as the most effective, evidence-based treatment for Autism Spectrum Disorder (A S D) and is endorsed by a number of state and federal agencies, including the U.S. Surgeon General and American Academy of Pediatrics. While A B A therapy is validated for Autism Spectrum Disorder, it is also applicable to children with other developmental disabilities.
A B A therapy fosters basic skills such as looking, listening, requesting and imitating, as well as complex skills such as reading, conversing and understanding another person’s perspective. A B A also helps reduce behaviors that make it difficult for children to learn. A number of completed studies have demonstrated that A B A techniques can produce improvement in communication, social relationships, play, self-care, and school. Children can learn necessary social skills and adaptive life skills. Basic skills like peer interactions, feeding, toileting, dressing, self-care and play can be taught through A B A, adding significant quality and independence to a child’s life.
